I'm Juanita Banks-Whittington, a children’s book author who loves educating and promoting diversity and inclusivity. I am a dedicated Author, Army Veteran, Social Worker, and Diversity Practitioner best known for “I Love My Daddy,” a heartwarming children's book about the special bond between a little girl and her father. I pursue to create more inclusive children's books that represent and have characters that mirror diverse children through the movement Diverse Children's Books Matter.
My writing journey started after my husband Ian told me he didn’t see many diverse fathers in the books he would read to our daughter Zuri. This put me on the path to educating and promoting diversity and inclusivity in children's books. I graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore with a degree in Social Work, and I hold certifications in Equal Employment Opportunity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Mediation. This gives me the unique ability to educate others on the importance of diversity and inclusivity.
I'm particularly proud of the joy and admiration I see on the faces of children and parents when they read “I Love My Daddy,” which has allowed my work to be featured in/on various news platforms, including Tabitha Brown's Very Good Mondays, NBC 4 Washington, Resilient Magazine, The Baltimore/Annapolis Times, The Washington Informer, Miami Times, and more.
Outside of writing, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, bowling, and window shopping. I currently live in Odenton, Maryland, along with my husband Ian, daughter Zuri, and family dog Ivy a Boston Terrier.
